Info about FlaresOne of the main pieces of safety equipment that every power boat, any human powered craft over 6m, personal watercraft and all sailboats (unless under 6m and does not have a motor) must carry is a type of visual distress signal. These include a watertight flashlight and flares and/or electronic visual distress signal device.
Flares are a type of pyrotechnic that produces a bright light or smoke signal that can be seen over a great distance. These come in very handy when out on the water in a time of need as help is not always as close as it may be on the land.
Did you know that flares have an expiration date? In accordance with Transport Canada requirements, flares are approved for 4 years from their date of manufacture. This will mean that by law you need to replace them every four years. And because these are pyrotechnics, you can not just throw them out in the garbage. They need to be disposed of with care and this can be a dilemma for many boaters. The Canadian Power Squadron (CPS-ECP) with select CIL/Orion Dealers are helping Canadian boaters with this issue and will be hosting Flare Disposal Days across Canada this year.
